Does Instagram Tell You When Someone Unfollows You?

No. Instagram doesn’t send a notification when someone unfollows you, and it doesn’t show a list of recent unfollowers anywhere in the app. The same is true in the other direction: if you unfollow someone, they aren’t told.

What Instagram does notify you about

• New followers. You get a notification when someone starts following you (unless you turned these off).
• Follow requests. If your account is private, you’re notified when someone asks to follow you.
• Interactions. Likes, comments, mentions, tags and messages.

Leaving is silent. Instagram’s design pushes positive signals and stays quiet about negative ones.

So how do people find out?

Usually in one of three ways:

1. They notice the number. Your follower count goes down and you start wondering who left.
2. They check a specific profile. Open the person’s profile, tap Following, and search for your username. If you’re not there, they don’t follow you.
3. They use a tracker. A follower tracker saves your follower list each time you scan and shows who disappeared between two scans.

Can someone tell that I unfollowed them?

Not through a notification. But they can find out the same ways you can: by noticing their count drop, by checking your Following list, or by using a tracker. If staying unnoticed matters to you, there’s a gentler option: mute the account. They stay in your Following list, but their posts and stories stop appearing in your feed.

What about removing a follower?
