Why Am I Losing Followers on Instagram?
October 31, 2026 · 2 min read
A small, steady churn of followers is normal for every account. But when the number keeps going down, it’s worth working out why. The cause is usually one of a handful of things, and some of them have nothing to do with you.
1. Instagram removed fake accounts
Instagram regularly removes spam, bot and inactive accounts. If several of your followers were fake, they can vanish all at once. A sudden drop with no change in your posting is often just a cleanup, and it doesn’t hurt your reach, because those accounts never engaged anyway.
2. Follow-for-follow accounts left
If you grew through follow-for-follow, follow trains or giveaways, many of those followers were only there for the follow-back. When you don’t follow them, or when they clean up their own lists, they leave.
3. Your content changed
People follow for a reason. If you used to post travel photos and now mostly post about your business, some followers will drift off. That’s not necessarily bad: you’re trading followers who aren’t interested for ones who are.
4. You post too little, or too much
- Too little: long gaps make people forget why they followed you, and Instagram shows your posts less.
- Too much: a flood of stories or near-identical posts can push people to unfollow or mute you.
Find a rhythm you can keep up for months, not weeks.
5. Content that annoys people
Heavy self-promotion, engagement bait (“comment YES if…”), or controversial posts outside your usual topics can all trigger unfollows.
6. People deactivated or got blocked
Followers who deactivate their account temporarily disappear from your list. And anyone who blocks you also stops following you.
How to work out what’s happening
The key is knowing who left and when:
- If it’s a batch of accounts with no profile pictures and random usernames, it’s a spam cleanup. Nothing to worry about.
- If it’s real people, check what you posted around that time.
- If it’s mostly old follow-for-follow accounts, that’s expected churn.
Unfollower Tracker saves a snapshot each time you scan and shows exactly who unfollowed you between scans. Scanning regularly turns “I lost 30 followers” into a list you can actually learn from.
What to do about it
- Post consistently around a clear theme.
- Use formats that reach new people, like Reels.
- Reply to comments and DMs. Engaged followers stick around.
- Don’t buy followers. They’re the first to be removed in a cleanup, and they drag down engagement while they’re there.
And remember that losing a few followers is normal. Growth is about the trend over months, not one bad week.
