How to See Who You’ve Unfollowed on Instagram
October 31, 2026 · 3 min read
Instagram doesn’t give you a simple “accounts I unfollowed” screen in the app. But you’re not stuck. Your data download from Instagram can include a list of recently unfollowed accounts, your own memory and search can fill the gaps, and if you unfollow through a tool, it can keep a log for you.
This is the opposite question from who unfollowed you. Here you’re the one who left, and usually you want to find someone again: an account you tapped by mistake, a friend you dropped during a cleanup, or a page whose name you’ve forgotten.
Why you might want this list
People usually look for it for one of a few reasons:
- An accidental unfollow. You meant to open a profile and hit the button instead.
- A cleanup that went too far. You cleared a batch of accounts and realise a few of them mattered.
- A name you can’t remember. You know you used to follow a small bakery or an artist, but not their handle.
- Keeping your own record. You want to know what changed in your following list over time.
Option 1: Your Instagram data download
Instagram lets you request a copy of your account information. In Settings, look for Accounts Center, then an option like “Your information and permissions” and “Download your information”. Choose your Instagram account and pick the followers and following information. Menus change, so if the path looks different, search Settings for “download”.
When the export arrives, open the followers and following section. Exports have typically included a file of recently unfollowed accounts, alongside your followers and following lists. How far back “recently” goes isn’t something Instagram spells out, so don’t count on it covering months or years.
If that file isn’t there, or doesn’t go back far enough, you can still compare an older export with a new one. Anyone in your old following list who isn’t in your new one is someone you unfollowed (or an account that was deleted).
Option 2: Search and reconnect by hand
If you only need one account back, the fastest route is often just searching. Try the name you remember, the topic, or a mutual friend’s following list. Instagram search also tends to suggest accounts you’ve interacted with before.
Once you find them, tap Follow. If the account is private, they’ll get a new follow request, and they’ll be able to see that you requested to follow again.
Option 3: An unfollow log from the tool you used
If you unfollowed people with a tool, check whether it kept a record. Unfollower Tracker has an Activity tab that logs every unfollow you make through the extension, so you can scroll back through a cleanup and see exactly who was removed and when.
Two things to keep in mind:
- The log only covers unfollows done through the extension, not ones you did in the app.
- The extension doesn’t follow accounts, so re-following is something you do yourself on Instagram. The log just tells you who to look for.
Will they notice you left, or came back?
Instagram doesn’t notify people when you unfollow them. Someone would only notice by checking their follower list, seeing their count change, or using a tracker. Does Instagram tell you when someone unfollows you? covers this in detail.
Following someone again works like any new follow: on a public account they’ll usually see a follow notification, and on a private account they’ll see a request. Most people won’t think twice about it.
How to avoid losing track next time
The easiest fix is to make unfollowing a bit more deliberate:
- Protect the accounts you care about. Before a big cleanup, add close friends, family and favourite creators to a whitelist so they can’t be selected by accident.
- Review before you confirm. Scan the list of selected accounts once more. It takes a minute and saves the hunt later.
- Go in batches. Smaller rounds are easier to review and gentler on Instagram’s limits. Bulk unfollowing safely explains the pacing.
- Copy the usernames. Before you start, copy or export the list you’re about to unfollow and keep it somewhere.
The short version
- There’s no in-app “unfollowed” list, but Instagram’s data download has typically included recently unfollowed accounts.
- For one account, search for it and follow again.
- If you use a tool, check its log. Unfollower Tracker’s Activity tab records every unfollow it makes.
- Next time, whitelist the accounts you want to keep and review before you confirm.
