Instagram Collabs: Growing With Other Creators
October 31, 2026 · 3 min read
Collaborating is one of the fastest honest ways to grow on Instagram, because it puts you in front of people who already trust someone else. When a creator your audience likes shares a post with you, their followers get a personal introduction instead of a random suggestion. The trick is picking the right partner and making something both audiences actually enjoy.
What counts as a collab
“Collab” covers a few different things on Instagram:
- Collab posts. Instagram has a feature that lets you invite another account as a collaborator on a Feed post or Reel. If they accept, the post appears on both profiles and shows both names at the top. Likes, comments and views are shared. Look for an option like “Invite collaborator” when you tag people before posting.
- Shared Lives. You can bring a guest into an Instagram Live, so both audiences can watch together.
- Takeovers. One creator runs the other’s Stories for a day.
- Shout-outs and features. You recommend each other in Stories or posts.
- Joint projects. A challenge, a giveaway or a series you run together over several weeks.
Collab posts are usually the strongest for growth, because the content lives permanently on both profiles and keeps getting discovered.
Why collabs work
The algorithm leans on relationships: people see more from accounts they already engage with. A collab borrows that relationship. Your partner’s followers see the post in their feed because they follow your partner, and if they like it, your profile is one tap away.
It also helps your credibility. A recommendation from someone they trust says more than any bio.
Finding the right partner
Size matters less than fit. A partner with a similar or slightly bigger audience who shares your topic is usually better than a huge account in an unrelated niche.
Look for accounts where:
- The audience overlaps, but not completely. A vegan baker and a plant-based meal-prep account share interests but probably not all followers.
- The engagement looks real. Comments from actual people, not generic emoji. Our guide on spotting fake followers covers the warning signs.
- The tone fits yours. If your styles clash, both audiences will feel it.
- They’re active. Someone who posts regularly will promote the collab properly.
Good places to start: people already commenting on your posts, creators you follow and enjoy, and accounts that show up next to yours in search.
How to pitch a collab
Keep the message short and specific. A good pitch includes:
- Something genuine about their work, so it’s clear you’re not copy-pasting.
- A concrete idea, such as “a Reel where we each make the same recipe with a different budget.”
- What’s in it for them, like an audience that fits, or an idea that’s easier to make together.
- An easy next step: “Happy to draft the script if you’re in.”
Don’t lead with follower counts or ask for a shout-out with nothing in return. And don’t be put off by silence. Busy creators miss messages; one polite follow-up after a week or two is fine.
Tip: build the relationship before the pitch. Comment on their posts and reply to their Stories for a while first. A name they recognise gets a better response.
Making the content work for both audiences
- Make it a real piece of content, not an ad for each other.
- Give each person a clear role so viewers understand why you’re together.
- Hook in the first second, just like any other Reel. Our guide to Reel views has more on this.
- Agree on posting time, caption and who replies to comments.
After the collab
Expect a bump in profile visits. This is where your profile does the work: a clear bio and strong pinned posts turn visitors into followers. If you’re not sure your profile is ready, read how to write a bio that gets follows first.
Some new followers from a collab will leave after a while. That’s normal; not everyone who liked one post wants all of them. What matters is net growth over the next few weeks.
The short version
- Collab posts, shared Lives and takeovers put you in front of an audience that already trusts your partner.
- Pick partners for fit and real engagement, not just size.
- Pitch a specific idea with a clear benefit for them.
- Make genuinely good content together, and have your profile ready for the visitors.
