Instagram Insights: The Numbers Worth Watching
October 31, 2026 · 3 min read
Instagram Insights is the built-in analytics for professional accounts, and it shows far more numbers than you need. The ones worth watching are reach, the share of that reach coming from non-followers, saves and shares, profile visits, and follows. Together they tell you whether people find you, whether they care, and whether they stick around.
Everything else is useful occasionally, but these few numbers answer the questions that matter.
How to get Insights
Insights is only available on professional accounts (creator or business). Switching is free. In the app, look in Settings for an account type or professional account option. Once switched, you’ll find Insights from your profile, usually through a professional dashboard button, and on each post.
Insights generally only covers activity from after you switched, and it keeps a limited history. If you want long-term records, write a few numbers down each month.
Reach: how many accounts saw you
Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your content. It’s different from views or impressions, which count every time something was seen, including repeat views by the same person.
Reach is your best measure of visibility. If reach is falling, fewer people are seeing your posts, and you should look at that before blaming the content itself.
Followers vs. non-followers
Insights usually splits reach into followers and non-followers. This is one of the most useful numbers on the platform.
- Mostly followers: your content is serving your existing audience. Good for loyalty, but it won’t grow you.
- A healthy share of non-followers: your content is being recommended to new people, usually through Reels and Explore.
If you want to grow, watch which posts get the highest non-follower reach and make more like them. Our guide on how the algorithm works explains why Reels tend to lead here.
Interactions: saves and shares first
Insights shows likes, comments, saves and shares for each post. Likes are the least informative. Saves mean people want to come back to it. Shares mean people thought someone else should see it. Both are strong signs of value.
When you review a month of posts, sort them mentally by saves and shares, not likes. That’s your list of what to make more of. To turn these into one comparable number, see how to calculate engagement rate.
Profile visits and follows
These two together show whether your profile converts:
- Profile visits tell you how many people were curious enough to tap through.
- Follows tell you how many of those decided to stay.
Lots of visits but few follows usually means the profile doesn’t explain why someone should follow. Rework your bio and pinned posts; our bio guide can help.
Insights also shows follows and unfollows over a period, but as totals. It doesn’t list which accounts left. If you want to know who unfollowed, you need to compare follower lists over time, which is what a tool like Unfollower Tracker does by saving scans in your browser. Insights tells you how many; a tracker tells you who.
Reels: watch time and retention
For Reels, look at views, but also how long people watch and whether they stay to the end. A Reel with modest views but strong retention is a good format to repeat. A Reel where most people drop off in the first two seconds needs a better hook.
Tip: compare Reels by retention, not just total views. Views depend partly on luck; retention tells you whether the video itself held attention.
Audience: who and when
The audience section shows broad details like top locations, age ranges and when your followers are most active. Use the activity times as a starting point for testing when to post, as explained in finding your best time to post.
How to use Insights without obsessing
- Check weekly or monthly, not after every post.
- Compare similar posts to each other: Reels with Reels, carousels with carousels.
- Look for patterns across several posts, not one standout.
- Pick one thing to change at a time, so you can tell what worked.
The short version
- Insights needs a free professional account.
- Watch reach, non-follower reach, saves and shares, profile visits and follows.
- Use retention to judge Reels.
- Insights shows how many people followed or left, not who. Review trends monthly and change one thing at a time.
