Should You Buy Instagram Followers? Why It Backfires

October 31, 2026 · 3 min read

No. Buying Instagram followers gets you a bigger number and nothing else. The accounts you pay for won’t like, comment, share or buy anything, and having lots of them can make your real posts reach fewer people. It also goes against Instagram’s rules, which ban fake engagement.

It’s easy to see why people are tempted. A new account with 40 followers feels invisible, and a few dollars for a thousand followers looks like a shortcut. Here’s why that shortcut tends to lead somewhere worse.

What you’re actually buying

Most follower packages are a mix of:

  • Bot accounts created in bulk, often with no profile picture, no posts or stolen photos.
  • Inactive or abandoned accounts that someone controls.
  • Real people in follow-exchange schemes, who followed you because they were paid or promised followers in return.

None of these people chose to follow you because of your content. So none of them will engage with it.

Why it hurts your reach

When you post, Instagram shows the post to some of your followers and watches how they respond. If a big chunk of your audience never reacts, the post can look less interesting than it really is, as explained in how the algorithm works.

Bought followers also wreck your engagement rate. An account with 10,000 followers and 40 likes a post looks suspicious to anyone who checks, including brands looking for creators to work with. Many of them check exactly this.

They don’t stay

Instagram regularly removes fake and spam accounts. When that happens, bought followers disappear in batches, and your count drops suddenly. If you’ve ever seen a sharp overnight drop, this is one of the common reasons.

Some sellers promise “refills” for lost followers, which just means buying more of the same problem.

The account risks

  • Rules. Instagram’s terms prohibit artificially inflating followers or engagement. Accounts that do it can have content limited or, in serious cases, face restrictions.
  • Passwords. Some services ask for your login so they can “grow” you with automated follows and likes. Never hand over your password. It puts your account at risk and the automated activity can trigger blocks. Read why you should never share your password with apps.
  • Spam magnet. Bot followers often bring more bot attention: spam DMs, fake comments and dodgy offers.

Credibility costs more than it looks

People notice. Comments full of generic emoji from strangers, a follower count that doesn’t match the likes, or a sudden jump from 200 to 5,000 overnight all look off. For a business or creator, trust is the whole point of being on Instagram. Losing it costs far more than the followers did.

If you’ve already bought followers

It isn’t the end of the world. You can clean up:

  1. Stop buying, and stop any service that has access to your account. Change your password if you shared it.
  2. Remove obvious fake followers over time. Instagram lets you remove a follower from your followers list without blocking them. Do it gradually rather than hundreds at once.
  3. Focus on content that brings real people, so your genuine audience grows and the fakes become a smaller share.

Our guide to removing bot followers walks through this, and it’s worth reading before you start.

What to do instead

Real growth is slower but it compounds. A clear niche, Reels made for strangers, a profile that explains why to follow, and collabs with similar accounts will bring followers who actually watch. Our guide to growing organically lays out a step-by-step plan.

Tip: a small account where people reply to your Stories is worth more than a big one where nobody does. Brands, clients and the algorithm all care about the replies.

The short version

  • Bought followers don’t engage, and they can lower the reach of your real posts.
  • They often vanish in Instagram’s fake-account cleanups.
  • Fake engagement breaks Instagram’s rules, and password-based services put your account at risk.
  • Spend that effort on content and community instead.
