How to Check if Someone Follows You on Instagram
October 31, 2026 · 3 min read
The quickest way to check if someone follows you is to search for their name in your own Followers list. If they show up, they follow you. If they don’t, they don’t, or they’ve changed their name. There are a few other ways too, and they’re useful when the first one is unclear.
This guide is about checking one specific person. If you want the whole list of people who don’t follow you back, that’s a different job, covered in who doesn’t follow me back.
Four ways to check
Method 1: Search your own Followers list
This is the most reliable check, and it works for any account, public or private.
- Go to your profile.
- Tap or click Followers.
- Type their username or name into the search bar at the top.
If they appear, they follow you. Searching by username is safer than by display name, since display names can be anything and can be shared by lots of people.
If they don’t appear, try a couple of spellings. People change usernames more often than you’d think. If you still can’t find them, they don’t follow you right now.
Method 2: Look at the button on their profile
Open their profile and look at the main button:
- If you don’t follow them and it says Follow Back, they follow you.
- If it just says Follow, they don’t.
This is fast, but it only helps when you don’t follow them. If you already follow each other, the button just shows that you’re following, which doesn’t say anything about them. In that case, use method 1 or method 3.
Instagram changes button labels from time to time, so treat this as a quick hint rather than proof.
Method 3: Search their Following list
You can also look at it from their side.
- Open their profile.
- Tap Following.
- Search for your own username.
If you’re there, they follow you. This works on public accounts, and on private accounts only if you follow them and they’ve accepted. Some people’s following lists are long, so search rather than scroll.
Method 4: Check it in a tracker
If you’ve scanned your account with Unfollower Tracker, you can search your saved lists from the dashboard. Someone who follows you but whom you don’t follow back appears in the Fans tab. Someone you follow who doesn’t follow you back appears in Don’t follow back. If you’ve scanned before, the Unfollowed me tab also shows whether they used to follow you and left between scans.
The answer is as fresh as your latest scan, so scan again if you need it to be current.
Why the answer can look wrong
A few situations confuse things:
- They blocked you. You won’t be able to find their profile, and they won’t be in your followers list.
- Their account is deactivated. They temporarily disappear from all follower lists until they log back in.
- You removed them. If you removed someone as a follower, they stop following you until they follow again. Removing followers explains how that works.
- Their follow request is pending. If your account is private, people who requested to follow you aren’t followers until you approve them. Check your follow requests.
- The list hasn’t loaded fully. On a slow connection, searches in long lists sometimes miss people. Close it and try again.
Will they know you checked?
No. Instagram doesn’t notify anyone when you look at their profile, their following list, or search your followers for their name. It also doesn’t tell anyone who viewed their profile, and no app can show that either.
If they used to follow you
If you’re checking because you suspect someone unfollowed you, method 1 tells you where things stand now, but not when they left. To know that, you need records over time. How to see recent unfollowers explains how to set that up.
The short version
- Search their username in your Followers list. That’s the most reliable check.
- “Follow Back” on their profile is a quick hint when you don’t follow them.
- For public accounts, or private ones you follow, you can also search their Following list for your name.
- Nobody is notified when you check.
