How to See Recent Unfollowers on Instagram

October 31, 2026 · 4 min read

To see who unfollowed you recently, you need a record of your followers from before the drop and a fresh one from now. Instagram doesn’t keep a “recent unfollowers” list for you, so the answer depends on whether you already have that earlier record. If you do, it takes a minute. If you don’t, you can still narrow things down, and you can make sure next time is easy.

First, check if you have a baseline

“Recent” only means something relative to a point in the past. Ask yourself whether you have any of these:

  • A follower tracker that has scanned your account before.
  • An Instagram data download from a few weeks ago.
  • A screenshot or list you made of your followers at some point.

If yes, jump to the next section. If not, skip ahead to “No baseline? Here’s what still works”.

If you’ve been scanning: read the window

With a tracker, recent unfollowers are simply the accounts that were in your last snapshot but aren’t in today’s. In Unfollower Tracker, you click Scan now, wait for the scan to finish, and open the Unfollowed me tab. Each unfollower comes with the date range between the two scans where they disappeared.

A few tips for reading that list:

  • Look at the window size. If your last scan was yesterday, the window is tight. If it was two months ago, “recent” covers a lot of ground.
  • Look for clusters. Several accounts with no profile picture and random usernames leaving together usually means Instagram removed spam accounts, not that people reacted to a post.
  • Check surprising names. Open the profile. If it won’t load, the account was probably deactivated or deleted.

On the free plan, the extension keeps your last two scans, which is exactly what you need for “who left since last time”. Pro keeps the full history if you want to look further back.

If you have an old data download

Instagram lets you request a copy of your information, which includes your followers list. In Settings, look for Accounts Center, then something like “Your information and permissions” and “Download your information”. Menu names move around, so search Settings if you can’t find it.

Request a new export, then compare the two follower files. Anyone in the old file who isn’t in the new one has left since then. It works, but it’s slow: the export can take a while to arrive, and comparing hundreds of names by eye is tedious and easy to get wrong.

No baseline? Here’s what still works

Without an earlier record, you can’t get a complete list of recent unfollowers. Nobody can, because the information isn’t stored anywhere you can reach. But you can still check the people you’re curious about.

  • Check one person at a time. Open their profile and look at their Following list for your username. For a private account, you can only do this if you follow them. How to check if someone follows you goes through the options.
  • Look at your new-follower notifications. If someone followed you recently, their follow notification may still be in your activity feed. If they’re no longer in your followers list, they followed and then left, a pattern common with follow-for-follow accounts.
  • Check your Following list against your Followers. This shows who doesn’t follow you back right now, which isn’t the same as who unfollowed recently, but often overlaps. Non-followers and unfollowers explains the difference.

Then take a snapshot today, so the next time you wonder, you’ll have a real answer.

Why your count and your list may disagree

Sometimes your follower count drops by ten, but your tracker only shows six unfollowers. That’s normal. The count on your profile can lag behind, and it can be rounded for larger accounts. Accounts that were deactivated after your last scan and reactivated before this one won’t show up as changes at all. Trust the list over the number. If a sudden drop has you worried, why your count dropped overnight covers the usual causes.

What to do with the list

Most recent unfollowers aren’t a message. People tidy their following lists, lose interest in a topic, or leave Instagram for a while. If you see a pattern, like several real followers leaving right after a certain kind of post, that’s worth noting. A handful of random departures isn’t.

The short version

  • Instagram doesn’t show recent unfollowers, and no tool can see unfollows from before its first record.
  • With a tracker, scan now and read the unfollowers between your last two scans.
  • Without one, check individual accounts by hand and start tracking today.
